John Opie RA (16 May – 9 April ) was a Cornish historical and portrait painter. He painted many great men and women of his day, including members of the British Royal Family, and others who were most notable in the artistic and literary : Royal Academician. The prints and paintings (exhibited in a special gallery in Pall Mall) were intended not to show theatrical performances but to proclaim the merits of a British school of history painting. But although the project attracted public interest (a rival scheme was soon set up by J. Woodmason in Dublin), it failed in its aim.
